June 2025 Monthly Training Blast - VPNs (Virtual Private Networks)

Hey folks, Alex from AEP here with another monthly training blast. This month, I’d like to talk to you about why it’s important to use a virtual private network, or VPN.

I’m sure it’s something you’ve heard of before, at least in passing, a VPN is a tool that encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a remote server of your choosing somewhere else in the world. A VPN can help protect your data from eavesdropping, especially when you're using public Wi-Fi networks, which are often not secure.

A VPN can also help you hide your online activity from your ISP and other third parties. This can be important if you're concerned about government surveillance or if you simply want to keep your browsing habits private (keep in mind, the VPN company will still have your data, which is why it’s important, if you’re doing sensitive stuff, to shop around before making a choice of VPN company. I’ve put a link in the notes for an article talking about several alliances between countries that could affect your privacy if the VPN you want to use is based in any of those countries).

A VPN can allow you to access websites and content that are blocked in your country or “region”, as streaming services call them. This can be useful for accessing streaming services that are not available in your area, like if you’re looking for a cozy murder mystery that’s on Netflix in the UK but not the US or something.

One drawback of VPN usage is a reduction in internet speeds, which makes sense as your data needs to travel further to wherever your vpn is sending it. In some cases, a VPN can actually improve your internet speeds. This is because a VPN can bypass ISP throttling, which is when your ISP intentionally slows down your internet connection.

Overall, a VPN is a valuable tool that can help you protect your privacy, security, and freedom online. If you're not already using a VPN, I highly recommend that you start. I use Mullvad, which has been easy to set up and use on all my devices, and is less expensive than a lot of other options out there. They aren’t sponsoring this video or anything, just letting you know, that’s what i personally use, other popular options are NordVPN and ExpressVPN.

That’s it for this month, everyone stay safe out there!
